SPRING!!!
Hey! Long time no see.
Spring has been a wild one here, came in like a lion, literally storms and tornadoes the beginning of March and it went out like a lion too, haha! Thankfully, we made it through without much damage unlike many who lost everything. Spring in the south is a wild, unpredictable beast that takes a little getting used to. Though, I’m not sure you ever get used to it.
Anyways! It’s been busy with all the farm coming to life, spring is one of my favorite times. I’ll always be a summer girl, but, after winter, I’m just so ready to get my hands in the garden and see the signs of life coming back in all the plants and trees. One thing taking our time is getting our garden put in. Of course, I got a few things in the ground and the goats escaped right to it and ate them all down. We planted garlic for the first time this winter and it’s looking fantastic! Onions are in, a little bit of squash, radishes, beets, carrots, and potatoes. I also got tomatoes, peppers, green beans and corn in. Most of these due to our long growing season, will have at least one more round planted to keep us going all season. We’ve still got a lot to plant: peas, okra, cowpeas, hull peas, shelling beans, popcorn, peanuts, melons. SO. MANY. THINGS. This is why our summer is canning chaos!
Along with the garden, our broiler chickens are going strong. We’ve got a batch being processed this week and another batch ready to move out of the brooder to outside. Buster and Dot (the pigs) are growing so good. I love that we were able to add pigs to the farm. Dixie has been with the bull for about 6 weeks, she gets to come home this week!! We bred her with a hereford bull, and cannot wait to see that little baby. Her tentative due date is January 25. We can’t wait for a baby and fresh milk, big dreams coming true. A friend showed me cow pregnancy tests that we can administer with a small blood drop, so we’ll be trying that to see if she was bred before we get super excited. Kate is growing like a weed, we’re hoping to breed her this fall. Peaches babies ( Billy Bob and Charlene) are about to be weaned! That time went so fast! We’ve also added Jolene and Big John to the mix! They’re katadhin lambs that were born this winter and spring. We’re excited to be getting our lamb operation off the ground this year!
Along with all of this news, we were offered a huge opportunity to partner with our neighbors Sherrill Family Farms and help them sell at Mid-City Farmers Market in Huntsville!! This has been such a great time for us, getting to meet so many new people and being able to sell our farm items. I take baked goods, duck eggs, and homemade seasoning blends. I love getting to meet new people, so its been really fun!
Well, that’s all for now, I’m working to get on here more consistently, so I’ll have more updates for you soon!
